Ultimately, space can affect the therapies to lessen or treat Entomophobia, although not always positively. Treating Entomophobia through professional counselling sessions, therapy spaces are specifically designed for distressed individuals and will avoid qualities that could heighten anxiety. However, conclusions promote that seeing a therapist to treat Entomophobia is unfavourable suggesting alternative strategies need to be encouraged.
Supporting evidence suggests education is more successful in treating Entomophobia than healing strategies.
Educational spaces focus purely on teaching and therefore use methods that are widely understood by the general public but do not specifically accommodate individual circumstances. This limits their contribution to lessening Entomophobia and could increase its severity.
In conclusion, this could be overcome by creating an insect educational space that focuses the design and operational strategies primarily on the individual needs of Entomophobia sufferers. In survey 2, 72% of Entomophobia sufferers said ‘yes’ or ‘maybe’ to visiting an educational space that aimed to teach people about insects if it was specifically tailored for those with Entomophobia.
Unconventional to educational environments, considering spatial qualities successful to encouraging a calming atmosphere and reducing anxiety, with principles that effectively reduce Entomophobia (such as gradual exposure), could efficiently achieve this. However it is important to recognise that immediate space has an incomplete influence and other factors such as the state of the insect (e.g. whether it is dead or alive), relationship with others and personal circumstances have an impact. Each Entomophobia sufferer is unique, and as seen through research of treatments, it is important to ensure that a range of approaches and optional spatial experiences are offered.
Brief: Design an educational space that primarily facilitates the needs of Entomophobia sufferers, to successfully teach them about insects and ultimately lessen or treat their phobia.
